What you need

ItemWhere to find it
VPS IP address[YOUR_IP], in your client area [To be confirmed]
UserUsually root on a fresh install
Password or SSH keyThe welcome email or [CLIENT_AREA_LINK] [To be confirmed]

Connect

Open a terminal and run:

ssh root@[YOUR_IP]

Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities) and run:

bash
ssh root@[YOUR_IP]

Windows 10 and 11 include OpenSSH. Open PowerShell and run:

powershell
ssh root@[YOUR_IP]

If you prefer a graphical client, PuTTY works with the same IP and port 22.

Use an SSH key instead of a password

  1. Generate a key on your computer

    bash
    ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "my-laptop"
  2. Copy the public key to the VPS

    bash
    ssh-copy-id root@[YOUR_IP]
  3. Check that you get in without a password

    bash
    ssh root@[YOUR_IP]
What if the connection hangs or says "Connection refused"?
  • Check the IP and that the VPS is running in the panel [To be confirmed].
  • If you use a firewall, make sure port 22 is open. See the basic ufw firewall.
  • As a last resort, use rescue mode.
